We rolled up our sleeves again to help the environment: this time in Farkas-Erdő, Újpest, as part of the 10 Million Trees Foundation’s national climate protection initiative.

Farkas-Erdő is the largest green area in Budapest’s 4th district (85 hectares). We worked to restore a section planted about 25 years ago with a single tree species. As engineers, we know diversity builds resilience, so our aim is to create a native, mixed-species forest that can cope with climate change for generations.

We used “underplanting,” a method with placing young trees beneath the protective canopy of existing plants. The shade and wind protection help the saplings survive in the forest-steppe climate.

Today we planted 500 saplings, including the followings:
🌳English oak — a durable, long-term backbone species — and fast-growing native poplars
🌿 gray and quaking aspens: fast-growing, native poplar species that adapt exceptionally well to the area’s changing climatic conditions and will help the stand close out quickly
🍁 Field maple – a drought-tolerant, native mixed-species tree that will help foster the development of a biodiverse and resilient forest ecosystem
🍐 Wild pear – plays a strategic role, serving as a “distraction” food source to protect other valuable saplings from wildlife damage.

We’re a team that works well together not only in the office and at construction sites but also out in the field: we dug, planted, and installed protective netting. We achieved our goal at a good pace and in a great atmosphere. We believe that sustainable solutions are essential not only in the built environment but also in our natural surroundings. Thank you to the ’10 millió Fa Alapítvány’ (10 Million Trees Foundation) for your professional partnership!
