BIODIVERSE LANDSCAPING

Giving 170 Hectares Back to Nature

Out of the 400-hectare site of BMW’s Debrecen plant, 170 hectares were given back to nature through a unique biodiversity enhancement program. The goal of the initiative was to transform areas not required for production into natural habitats that support the local ecosystem and contribute to the restoration of biodiversity.
The program included the planting of more than 12,000 trees and shrubs, the creation of shelterbelts, a Miyawaki forest, as well as bee pastures and wildflower meadows. Biodiversity was further supported by installing insect hotels, birdhouses and nesting platforms (for species such as the saker falcon, kestrel, little owl and white stork), along with the implementation of green roofs.
The process was overseen on site by Realiscon’s Debrecen office, ensuring permanent presence and full project coordination. Our responsibilities covered design management, BIM management, construction management and technical supervision, securing high-quality delivery across all phases.
As a result, the plant’s surroundings have been transformed into a living, sustainable ecosystem, where the first wild animals – including hares and deer – have already appeared, and the blooming meadows now provide rich habitats for pollinators. This development is not only part of BMW’s sustainability strategy but also an important ecological investment for the wider Debrecen region.
